A character's class determines their general strengths and abilities. The combination of level bonuses, feat choices and skill points granted by their class determines the character's specific strengths and abilities.
The three player character classes are the Expert, the Spellcaster, and the Warrior.

When a character first takes a level in a class, the player must make several decisions that tailor that class to that character.
Attack and Defence: all characters have a base attack bonus and a base defence bonus. The player must allocate at least 1 point to each: poor progression costs 1 point, average progression costs 2 points, and good progression costs 3 points. Once allocated, the progressions chosen for this class cannot be changed.
Class Skills: All classes have a different number of class skills. The player must specify which skills are class skills (in addition to Craft and Profession, which are always class skills). Once allocated, these class skills can be changed every three class levels (that is, at 4th class level, then 7th, 10th, and so on).
Bonus Weapon and Armour Proficiency Feats: All classes have a different number of bonus weapon proficiency and armour proficiency feats. Once allocated, these bonus feats cannot be changed. Note that all humanoid characters are automatically proficient with the club, dagger, quarterstaff and nonlethal unarmed strike.
There are also some class progressions by the character class that cannot be changed by the player.
Bonus Class Feats: all classes gain bonus feats at a set rate, and these feats must be taken from the class feat list (combat for warriors, general for experts, magic for spellcasters). All characters gain a bonus feat at 1st class level, plus one bonus feat at every class level divisible by 2 (that is, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and so on). In the case of Spellcasters, the 1st level bonus feat must be Spellcasting if the character does not already have that feat.
Bonus Class Feats at 1st Character Level: A character gains two additional bonus class feats for the class taken at 1st character level. These feats must be taken from the class feat list (combat for warriors, general for experts, magic for spellcasters). Characters that have racial levels do not gain these two additional bonus feats, as racial classes do not gain bonus class feats.
Saves: There are three different saves (Fortitude, Reflex, and Will), and all characters have the same base save bonus for each one. The base save bonus starts at +0 and increases by +1 at 3rd character level and every three levels thereafter (that is, 3rd, 6th, 9th, and so on).
Bonus Save Feats at 1st Character Level: A humanoid character gains two additional bonus save feats at 1st character level (not 1st class level). Saves can be improved with the Save Focus, Improved Save Focus, and Greater Save Focus feats.
Magic Power: all classes have a set progression for magic power. This determines the rate at which characters increase in power level and power points. In addition, all living creatures begin with 1 power point, while unliving creatures (constructs and undead) begin with 0 power points.
Level-Dependent Benefits
Maximum Skill Ranks: characters can have a maximum number of ranks in a skill equal to character level + 3.
Bonus Feats: all characters gain one feat of any kind at 1st character level, plus one feat of any kind at every character level divisible by three (that is, 3rd, 6th, 9th, and so on).
Ability Point Increases: all characters gain one (1) ability point each time the character gains a level.
Characters may add new classes as they progress in level, becoming a multiclass character. Multiclassing improves a character's versatility at the expense of focussed power. You cannot take the same class twice: that is, you cannot multiclass as a Warrior/Warrior.
As a general rule, the abilities of a multiclass character are the sum of the abilities of their classes. Multiclass characters stack class levels with the same progression when determining their total base attack bonus, base defence bonus, base save bonuses, magic power and bonus class feat progression. Note that a multiclass character gains as many power points as their new magic power when they gain a level.
