Potestas: a D&D3E supplement

Experience

Experience Points (XP) measure your character's life experiences, their potential to change and develop, and their personal power. XP can be spent in a number of ways.

Gain Character Level: You can increase your character's level by one: the cost equals your current character level multiplied by 1000 (for example, a 5th level character must spend 5000 XP to increase to 6th level). A character can only advance one level at a time.

Reduce Level Adjustment: When a character with a level adjustment (LA) advances by character level, the level adjustment they start with becomes more and more of a burden. Eventually, the benefits of the creature type may be eclipsed by the benefits of the class features. You can reduce your character's level adjustment by one once the total of your class levels (not including creature type levels or LA) is equal to or greater than three times your level adjustment: the cost equals your current effective character level (ECL) - 1, multiplied by 1000 (for example, a character with an ECL of 5, a LA of +1 and 3 class levels must spend 4000 XP to reduce the LA to +0). If the LA is +2 or more, this process can be repeated until your level adjustment reaches +0, as indicated in the table below.

Cast Spell with XP Cost: You can provide the necessary power to cast a draining or taxing magic spell.

Create Magic Item: You can provide the necessary power to bind a magic spell into an object. Even if you do not have the necessary Item Creation feat, you can if willing pay the XP cost of crafting a magic item instead of the character with the feat.

Upgrade Magic Item: If you have a magic item, you can provide the necessary power to improve the spell bound into it. As you already have the magic item, you do not need to purchase additional raw materials. However, you must spend 1 hour/point of the Purchase DC of the improved item, and 2 times the XP Cost.
