Potestas: a D&D3E supplement
Chapter Two: Races
Centaurs (mortal humanoids)
Half-human, half-horse, the origins of the centaurs are lost in the past. Most
live out on the steppes and plains of central Arda, but centaurs are common
enough throughout the settled temperate lands of Selentia and Khitai. They live
short lives of around fifty years, and are proverbially tempestuous and hotheaded.
Centaurs tend to follow the dominant human religion in the kingdom where they
live. They can breed with centaurs and horses, and the form of the female in
the coupling determines the form of any offspring.
Racial Traits
- Large Size: centaurs receive a -1 size penalty to AC, -1
size penalty to attack rolls, -4 size penalty on Hide checks, and a +4 bonus
when resisting grapple checks. Their innate hoof strike damage is 1d4, but
their human half may not use larger weapons and does not gain any bonus when
initiating grapple checks. The lifting and carrying limits of their horse
half are twice that of Medium creatures, but the limits for their human half
are unchanged. They have 5 feet reach. A centaur employing a lance deals double
damage when it charges, just as a rider on a mount does.
- Characteristic Modifiers: +2 Dex, +4 Constitution, -2
Intelligence, +2 Wisdom. Centaurs are fit and tough. While they tend to be
slow learners, they are canny and perceptive. In addition, the horse half
of a centaur has +4 Strength, which increases carrying load and damage when
using hoof strikes.
- Base Speed: 50 feet.
- Low-Light Vision: centaurs can see twice as far as humans,
kattar and davinans in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions
of poor illumination, and can distinguish colours without difficulty.
- Natural Armour: centaurs have base +2 natural armour.
- Natural Weapon Proficiency: centaurs are proficient with
their hoof attacks, and are considered to be armed when attacking with their
hooves.
- Horsecunning: centaurs gain a +2 racial bonus to all Diplomacy
and Handle Animal checks when interacting with horses, and may use the Handle
Animal skill on horses even if the character is untrained.
- Automatic Languages: all centaurs automatically speak the
local language and the language of horses.
- Favoured Class: Hunter.
- Racial Hit Dice: centaurs begin with two levels of animal,
which provide 2d8 hit dice (12 hit points), +1 base attack bonus, +3 base
Fortitude save, +3 base Reflex save, one feat, and skill points equal to 5
x (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1). Class skills for these levels are Craft (Int),
Handle Animal (Cha), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex),
Profession (Wis), Spot (Wis), and Survival (Wis). Centaurs do not double the
hit points for their first level in a character class.
- Level Adjustment: +1.
- Racial Levels: centaurs can take up to two additional levels
of animal, to a maximum of four levels. Each level of animal provides 1d8
hit points, average base attack bonus progression, good Fortitude and Reflex
save progression, poor Will save progression, and (2 + Int modifier) skill
points. The Class skills for these levels are listed above. In addition, each
level provides +1 Strength, +1 Constitution, and +1 Natural Armour. The Strength
bonus applies to both the human and the horse halves of the centaur.
