Overview of Selentia

Selentia is the name used to describe their region by the inhabitants of the eastern portion of the continent Arda. Selentia is unified by a common cultural heritage as the heirs of the Selentine Empire and a shared religious experience of the True Faith. On the periphery of Selentia are frigid Mercania in the south, much of which is blanketed in ice and snow, and steamy Mungoda in the northeast, a land of jungles and swamps. West of Selentia are the endless steppes of the nomad Khanates, and beyond them the distant and exotic lands of Minj, Batubatan, the Mountains Under Heaven, Khitai and Yamato.

The majority of people in Selentia are Humans, but there are numerous other races, including Elves in the southeast, Dwarves in the great mountains, Centaurs throughout the settled lands south of the deserts and Kattar along the coastline in trading ports and cities. In the lands beyond there are towering Mercanians in the southern wastes, Goblins in the mountains of Krarth, and Mungodans in the northern parts of Mungoda, as well as great numbers of Centaurs in the steppes and Kattar throughout Minj and Batubatan. In addition to this, there are a large range of monsters and other creatures, from the undead raised by Pagan Sorcerers in mockery of God's gift of life to the older powers like the Dragons and the Pagan gods, as well as the Giants soaring far overhead in their castles among the clouds or on top of the Mountains Under Heaven.

Throughout Selentia, the basis of the economy is agricultural production. In the more settled kingdoms, there are also towns and cities full of merchants and traders, selling goods from as close as the next town or as far away as Batubatan and Khitai. The farmers and merchants are defended by soldiers in some lands and knights in others, depending on how organised the rulers are and how much they rely on subordinate rulers for power. Monarchs rule most lands, whether kings, queens, emperors or dukes, but there are also republics among the city-states and in Wesland, and these are led in most cases by a consul or pair of consuls. Finally, there are popular assemblies of the people in lands that either lack monarchs or have ineffective rulers. Usually, such lands are troubled and unsafe.

The windmill has become widespread over the past century or so, and these and watermills have almost completely eliminated the old hand mills in many parts of Selentia. Slavery has almost completely disappeared now throughout the southern kingdoms, but is still common in the desert kingdoms of the north and among the barbarians outside Selentia. Horses are the most commonly used beast of burden, though camels are still widely used as pack animals by those people who remember how effective the legions of the Selentine Empire found them.

Armourers now make suits of plates that completely cover the body, though the Dwarves still make the best armour and weapons, as they always have. The newest castles are almost impossible to destroy with catapults and ballistae, but relatively few are being built: most parts of Selentia are peaceful enough that the nobility prefer to maintain the castles they have or live in better furnished manor houses, and those kingdoms that border on the barbarian lands outside Selentia currently favour heavily armoured cavalry that can strike out at encroaching armies from fortified towns well within their borders. There are a number of international military orders that warriors from the more settled kingdoms can join in search of action, honour and glory, the most famous being the Order of the Rose.

People in Selentia either adhere to one of the understandings of the True Faith or are Pagans. Most people in the civilised Human kingdoms follow the True Faith, whereas the majority of people in the barbarian and non-Human kingdoms are Pagans. However, there are followers of the True Faith outside the boundaries of civilisation and Pagans within the Selentine world. The power of belief in the True Faith is demonstrated by the miracles worked by saints and other devout believers.

Magic is also a part of life in Selentia: everyone is aware of the Pagan legacy that the True Faith has supplanted and, in most part, overcome. The old powers (gods, spirits and elves) may have receded, but have not entirely disappeared. Most people understand that not all magic is Pagan: Druids, who draw on the power of the world around them, do not rely on Pagan traditions and bargains with old powers for their abilities. Sorcerers, however, are well known to be Pagans, drawn to the old ways and the sinister path by their desire for arcane power. In most of Selentia, the most prominent Pagans will be the local Sorcerers, particularly if they are members of the Tirynian Circle.
