The Order of the Rose is a chivalric association formed over a century ago at the court of the king of Teran and now international in scope. Members dedicate their lives to the service of God, the protection of the weak and helpless, and the propagation of the True Faith. To join one must demonstrate high standards of martial ability, piety, and honour. If accepted, new members detach themselves from their former lives, foregoing marriage, property and wealth, swearing loyalty only to the Officers of the Order and to God, and are titled Knight-Errant.
After proving themselves, members of the Order become Knights, and experienced Knights are honoured with the title of Knight-Bachelor. The bravest and noblest Knight-Bachelors may be made Lieutenants of the Order by any of the three Officers. The Officers are the Captain, who leads the Order in war, the Chancellor, who manages the assets of the Order, and the Master, who leads the Order in all things. All three Officers are elected by the Lieutenants or by the General Assembly of the Order on the death or resignation of the office-holder.
Members of the Order help protect the otherwise vulnerable commoners of Menarland and Old Duneld from Goblin incursions, travel among the Petkenaks as warrior-missionaries, and help defend Elmet, Murrell and Vestad from the armies of Krarth in times of great crisis. Very few participate in The Crusade, as the past three Masters have not considered warring against other believers in the True Faith a greater good than converting and battling the pagans on Vestad's borders.
The greatest living member of the Order of the Rose is Peregrinus, elected Master at the age of 23, who held the office from 1374 to 1380 before resigning to allow others to hold high office. Peregrinus turned from warfare to the monastic life in 1383: he currently lives at the monastery of Amalfi in southern Kevland.
